I'm doing a bunch of pattern routing in the next couple of weeks and figure putting foam/rubber tape on both sides of my templates and using them as both vacuum clamp and pattern will work best. There seems to be a dizzying array of foam/rubber tapes on the market advertised as various weatherstripping and gasket tapes... what's the best to use for this application?

Look for something that is closed cell. I got what I use from Joe Woodworker.

Maybe not the best but it was cheap and within reach.

The one and only. Well maybe not only.

I've purchased the stuff Joe WW sells and also used the water seal adhesive back rubber found in the RV and boat maintenance supply stores.

+1 on Allstar Adhesives.
o-ring cord stock also works.
Here another low tech clamping bag, which works pretty well actually.

Neoprene round cord is where it's at.

As others said: if you can't get it locally, Allstar Adhesives has what you need. The round cord works best, and I use it with a square bottom groove cut just a bit over half its diameter. I use the 3/16" stuff just because.

Pretty much anything works well as a vacuum bag- we often use clear garbage bags at work. You can seal the bag to the hose with electrical tape, or even a few zip ties.
